The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the option to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
