The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
