Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using such treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to starting weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
