A two-month voyage circling the Land Down Under is being halted days after the fatal incident of an elderly woman who was left behind by the cruise liner on a isolated island.

The passenger had been hiking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the vessel, but parted ways from the party for a rest. The liner left without her and returned several hours later after the personnel became aware the lady was unaccounted for.

A major rescue mission located her person the following day.

Authorities are examining the tragedy, alongside law enforcement and the medical examiner.

Head of the voyage organizer said that guests and staff on the vessel were informed that the continuation of the cruise had been terminated due to the "tragic passing and earlier engine troubles".

In a statement, he further stated that guests would be given a total repayment, and said the company was working "to organize the return journeys of the passengers via private aircraft".

Officials also issued an updated communication, and said they had "delivered a directive to the Master" prohibiting any new passengers from boarding the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would visit the ship in the port city upon its coming back.

Timeline of Incidents

The vessel originally sailed from the coastal city on 24 October, and was just two days into the journey at the time of the 80-year-old's death. Lizard Island was the opening port on the voyage.

Guests on the vessel - who usually pay large sums of currency to participate in the voyage - were taken there for a daily excursion with the option of hiking or snorkeling.

The daughter of the victim said that her family was "stunned and saddened that the vessel left Lizard Island after an organised outing without my mum".

Via her announcement, she described her mother as an "vigorous octogenarian" who was a member of a hiking group.

"Based on limited details we have been told, it looks that there was a lapse of attention and basic judgment," she said.

She continued that she hoped the examination would be able to pinpoint what "the organization should have performed that might have preserved Mum's existence".

"According to reports from the authorities that it was a extremely warm afternoon, and she became unwell on the uphill trek," she explained.

"She was asked her to return, alone. Then the vessel departed, seemingly without conducting a roll call.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or not long after, mother passed away, by herself."

Organization Response

Through an announcement, the Chief Executive affirmed that the company was "working closely with investigators to assist their investigation".

He stated that the company was "extremely apologetic that this has happened" and had offered its full support to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Practices

The ship serves up to a hundred twenty passengers with nearly fifty personnel, according to company data. It was specifically designed to reach isolated regions of the Australian coast and is equipped with "auxiliary vessels" - minor craft used to transport passengers on day excursions.

Events like this are infrequent, and passenger vessels have systems to track which individuals are embarking or leaving, according to travel authorities.

"Sneaking ashore or [back] aboard simply isn't an option," a specialist remarked.

Vessel operators regard these methods very seriously and have "sophisticated systems in place to stop such events from happening," the authority added.

"This seems to be most likely a stunning - and tragic - isolated incident."
