British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
